More women are embarking on backpacking journeys than ever before. Yet budget accommodation often falls short in efficiency, privacy, and hygiene, particularly for women. Airport sleeping pods are promising but lack the city-centre locations spontaneous travellers need. This design offers a self-service urban travel pod in central areas that directly addresses these shortcomings. It combines multi-functional products with smart space-saving solutions, allowing travellers to rest and recharge with minimal friction before continuing their journey. Beyond functionality, the design encourages sustainable travel and personal growth—while questioning whether sustainability and convenience can coexist comfortably in a compact space.
It is accessed via an app-based booking system and can be placed either indoors or in open public areas. For privacy and security, its reflective exterior blends seamlessly with both urban surroundings and city green spaces.
Inside, backpacker-specific amenities are shaped and coloured to evoke a sense of calm. They prioritise low water and energy consumption, arranged for efficiency with a minimal footprint. Multifunctional and cordless, they reduce product clutter. Featuring a dry auto-toilet, fluid cleaning rail, and garbage collector, the pod offers full self-service access.
